Magic: The Gathering is no stranger to epic crossovers, but its latest Universes Beyond release—Marvel’s Spider-Man—is poised to be one of the most exciting yet. Launching on 19th September at Wizards Play Stores nation wide, this set brings the web-slinging world of Spider-Man into Magic’s core gameplay, and it’s not just a novelty—it’s a full-fledged, Standard-legal set designed to welcome new players and thrill veterans alike.
New Mechanics That Feel Superpowered
The Spider-Man set introduces three standout mechanics that blend flavor and function beautifully:
Web-Slinging: A flexible alternate casting cost that lets you return a tapped creature to your hand to cast a spell. It’s reminiscent of Ninjutsu but doesn’t require the creature to be unblocked, making it more versatile and thematic.
Mayhem: A twist on Madness, this mechanic allows you to cast a card from your graveyard if you discarded it earlier in the turn. It’s simpler and more intuitive, perfect for newer players while still offering strategic depth.
Modal Double-Faced Cards (MDFCs): Many heroes, including Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man, Miles Morales // Ultimate Spider-Man, and Gwen Stacy // Ghost-Spider, appear as MDFCs. You can play them in their civilian form or flip them into their superhero identity, adding dynamic decision-making to every game.
Why Existing Players Should Be Excited
Veteran Magic players have a lot to look forward to:
Standard Legality: Unlike previous Universes Beyond sets, Spider-Man is playable in Standard from day one. This means you’ll see Venom, Green Goblin, and Spider-Ham swinging into competitive decks.
Collector’s Heaven: From Borderless Panel Cards that mimic comic book pages to Iconic Cover Cards featuring legendary Spider-Man art, this set is packed with premium treatments. The ultra-rare Cosmic Foil Soul Stone is already generating buzz among collectors.
Pick-Two Draft Format: A new drafting experience designed for four-player pods, making Limited play more accessible and social.
Why New Players Should Jump In Now
If you’ve ever been curious about Magic, this is the perfect time to start:
Welcome Decks: Instead of complex Commander decks, the set offers simple, character-themed 60-card decks designed for beginners.
Familiar Faces: Whether you’re a fan of Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Punk, or the adorable Spider-Ham, the set is packed with recognizable heroes and villains that make learning the game more engaging.
Final Thoughts: A Web Worth Weaving
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t just a crossover—it’s a celebration of storytelling, strategy, and superhero flair. Whether you're a longtime Planeswalker or just stepping into the multiverse, this set offers something spectacular for everyone.

As the game unfolds, players can work toward their secret objective. Once a player meets the condition on their chosen villain card, they reveal it—and from that point on, each opponent loses the game at the end of their own turn, unless they can stop the villain in time.
As a reward for participating, players can take home a pack of event materials (while supplies last), making it a memorable and replayable experience beyond the event.
